Updating your team Web site via FTP

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) may be used to transfer files to the server (publish your Web pages).  Anonymous FTP is not allowed, you must specify the User Id and Password you received in class.  Many Web page creation tools have built in support for FTP.

For some tools, like MS Front Page, you specify "usf.rho.net" as the FTP server, "public_html" as the directory in a separate field, and give your User Id and Password. The system automatically goes to the correct usf-tNN directory based on your User Id.

The ws_ftp95 le program is free and will do the FTP transfers from Windows machines.  This program is on some machines at USF or can be downloaded from Ipswitch.com.  You can transfer files by following these steps:

Start ws_ftp or click the Connect button and you will get a Session Properties window.  Enter the following values:

Profile name: your choice
Host name/address: usf.rho.net
Host type: automatic
User ID: enter the user id you were given in class
Anonymous: clear the check box
Password: use the password you were given in class (you may be prompted for the password again)
Save Pwd: please clear this check box if you are using a shared computer
Account: leave this field empty

Click OK, and the program should connect to the server (you may be prompted for your password).  Once you have connected, you should see two windows. In the window on the right you will see an entry for the public_html directory. Double click on this to open the public_html directory which is where you want to load your files.  Initially this directory will be empty.

To upload files to the server, select one or more files in the window on the left and click the right arrow button (-->) to copy the files to the server.

To download files from the server, select one or more files in the window on the right and click the left arrow button (<--) to copy the files to your local system.

Updating the shared class web site via FTP

When you connect to the server specifying the User Id for a team as described above, you will automatically be connected to the directory for your team (/usr/people/usf-tNN).

To access the shared class directory (mba649) using ws_ftp:

  1. In the right window, double click on the Parent Directory symbol (the first entry in the window with an up arrow symbol and name '..').

  2. This will display a list of directories (/usr/people/), scroll down until you find mba649. Double click on the mba649 name to open the directory.

  3. This directory contains a sub-directory public_html. Double click on the public_html directory name to open the directory.

Upload or download files for the shared class Web site to the public_html subdirectory (/usr/people/mba649/public_html) using the procedures described above for updating your team area.
